  6. OVERVIEW
  7.  
  8. This is a special release of VirusScan Version 2.1.0 to detect
  9. and remove the KAOS virus which was accidentally distributed on
  10. Usenet.
  11.  
  12. This version of VirusScan is provided at no charge to the user.
  13. While McAfee has made reasonable efforts to test this version
  14. no guarantee is given as to the accuracy or fitness of this
  15. special version of VirusScan.
  16.  
  17. The KAOS Virus is a direct-action (not memory-resident) .COM and
  18. .EXE file infector.  Infected files are increased by 697 bytes.
  19.  
  20. The virus is simple and uses no mechanisms such as encryption or
  21. stealth techniques to avoid detection.  It has one text string that
  22. reads "KAOS4 / Köhntark" inside its code.  The virus contains no
  23. routines to do anything except replicate.

  26. INSTRUCTIONS
  27.  
  28. 1.      Copy the SCAN.EXE, SCAN.DAT, NAMES.DAT, and CLEAN.DAT files
  29.         to a floppy disk.  Label this the VirusScan disk and write-
  30.         protect it.
  31.  
  32. 2.      Boot the computer you wish to check from a clean (virus-free)
  33.         DOS boot diskette.
  34.  
  35. 3.      Insert the VirusScan diskette into the computer, change to
  36.         that disk drive, and run VirusScan by typing:
  37.  
  38.                 SCAN {drive(s)}
  39.  
  40.         Where {drive(s)} is the drive(s) you wish to scan for the
  41.         KAOS virus.
  42.  
  43. 3a.     If the virus is found, run VirusScan with the /CLEAN option
  44.         to remove the virus by typing:
  45.  
  46.                 SCAN {drive(s)} /CLEAN
  47.  
  48.         This will remove the virus code from infected files.
